TMJ/TMD Services
Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ), or jaw joints, are the hinged joints on either side of the jaw that are responsible for opening and closing the mouth. Some patients experience recurring jaw joint pain and discomfort and suffer from a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) in which one or both joints do not move in a smooth, fluid manner.
Frequent headaches and clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep are common symptoms of TMJ disorders. The long-term effects of TMD can lead to serious dental problems and pain management issues if not addressed.
Treatment for TMD is varied; some patients find relief from occasional discomfort using over the counter pain relievers or cold compresses. In some cases, a therapeutic approach using a bite appliance worn at night (nightguard) to protect the jaw joints from bruxism or clenching can help manage more chronic symptoms. Referral to dental specialists is sometimes necessary.
As part of a complete dental examination, Dr. McDonald will evaluate your jaw joints and obtain a dental background to uncover possible signs of TMD. If you have a history of teeth grinding, clenching or jaw pain, she may recommend a TMJ study using xrays and joint vibration analysis to analyze your symptoms and develop a plan to manage them.
If you are experiencing jaw pain or are aware that you grind or clench your teeth, please contact our office to schedule a complete examination so that Dr. McDonald can fully evaluate your oral health and address your specific needs. |
